Abstract:
The mentally ill are being inappropriately “processed through the criminal justice system instead of through the mental health” system, as they are not receiving treatment and have nowhere else to go. This article focuses on the increased incarceration rates, the challenges in providing care, and the precautionary measures should be put in place before the mentally ill find themselves in jails and prisons. Keywords: lack of available treatment facilities; deinstitutionalization; rehabilitation services; privatization; Law enforcement training; On-call resources
