Abstract:
When stigmatization and discrimination are combined with the challenges that already exist for individuals to obtain care, there are systemic failures. This article explores the problem of caring for prisoners who entered the corrections system when they suffered from mental illness or who develop age-related mental illness during the course of incarceration. Also included is a sidebar on the availability of medical services in U.S. state prisons. Keywords: emergency visits; prejudicial attitudes; widespread deinstitutionalization; inadequate mental health care; re-entry; employment prospects
