Abstract: 

This article provides a brief history and current status of drug treatment programs in federal prisons; reviews existing research on the outcomes and effectiveness of programs; discusses a variety of organizational and clinical issues faced in developing and managing a drug treatment operation of such large scale; and points to future directions in assessment and treatment in corrections and elsewhere.
