Abstract: 

This article summarizes the key findings from the quasi-experimental 12-month comparison study of a New York City-wide diversion program that targets jail detainees with co-occurring serious mental illness and alcohol and/or drug abuse or dependence. The study addresses the effect of mandated vs. non-mandated diversion, treatment, and individual client characteristics on a number of criminal justice, mental health, substance use, and service use outcomes.
