Abstract:
The Oswego County Drug Treatment Court (OCDTC), which held its first court hearing on August 16, 1999, was one of the first rural, county-wide courts in New York State. In two and a half years of operation, the OCDTC has grown threefold in both the number of defendants referred to the program as well as the number of participants enrolled since its first six months of program activity. The court has grown from an unknown entity with a team of two into a recognized and integrated component of the county’s criminal justice system with a drug court team of seven meeting each week. This article explains the implementation of the OCDTC and highlights the positive results of the program. Keywords: drug court
