Abstract:

This article details the prevalence of mental health issues in the US correctional system and offers policy options for better dealing with offenders with such issues. Clarence Sundram notes that the large increase in offenders with mental health issues can be attributed to structural changes and policy decisions that put offenders in correctional facilities instead of getting them the help that they need. The author explains why this situation is detrimental and offers alternative policy options that can more effectively deal with this population of offenders with mental health.
