Abstract:

In recent decades, research from a variety of disciplines has examined the issue of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Much of this literature has focused on specific populations, such as veterans of war and rape victims. However, few studies have examined the impact of PTSD on incarcerated individuals. Research has shown that Preliminary evidence suggests that PTSD may have an equally detrimental effect on inmates, particularly when they are reentering society after incarceration. The effects of PTSD present an issue for formerly incarcerated individuals and their families, as well as professionals working with these individuals. The authors explain that properly diagnosing and providing appropriate treatment to affected individuals could reduce the negative impact of PTSD.
