Abstract: 

Exposure to parental substance abuse and subsequent parental incarceration puts children at risk for a variety of physical, mental health, and behavioral problems. This articles describe some of the parenting interventions that have been developed for incarcerated populations regardless of substance abuse status, their positive impact and their limitations. The programs address a range of skills including communication, stress reduction, attachment-based approaches, post incarceration parenting and stress the importance of developing more comprehensive parenting intervention programs in incarcerated settings that include not only the parents but also the primary caregiver as well as the children.
