Abstract: 

It has long been suggested that the mentally ill inmate is at increased risk of sexual victimization. Whereas the patterns of sexual victimization remained unchanged, National Inmate Survey-3 was the first of the three national surveys to estimate sexual victimization rates among mentally ill prison and jail inmates. This article explores victimization by the numbers and what can be done to treat and protect this vulnerable population.
