Abstract:

The Wyoming Department of Corrections offers a variety of programming opportunities to offenders who enter the system by means of probation or as an inmate. These opportunities often are initiated by offender assessments that attempt to identify the level of risk and needs exhibited by the offender. Once these assessments have been completed, the information derived from them is used to classify offenders wherever they are in the system, and perhaps just as important, this information is used to drive supervision and case management. Once a case plan has been established it is up to the staff member working with the offender to make appropriate referrals to counseling, education/vocational training, and any other area targeted by the risk and needs tool. This article discusses the success of this program.
