Impairment and Crime in Indian Country

Abstract:
Native American communities are hard hit by crime, including occurrences of impaired driving and drugand alcohol-related crimes. In 2009, of the 2,176 inmates in custody in correctional facilities in Indian Country, 229 were incarcerated for DWI/DUI and 107 for drug offenses, continuing a downward trend from 274 and 133, respectively, in 2000.
