Abstract: 

A large body of evidence now exists supporting an observation made by both Plato and Aristotle that alcoholism runs in families. Alcoholism appears to be a multifaceted genetic disease in which hereditary and environmental factors converge. This article addresses many factors that influence alcohol abuse including biology, environment, gender, and ethnicity.
