Abstract:
One of the more overlooked issues in evaluating DUI/DWI offenders is the determination of whether the offender meets criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence. Disposition of offenders is often informed by the BAC, previous offenses, or other measures. Interestingly, the determination of whether the offender is or is not dependent upon alcohol is often not considered. The case is made that distinguishing dependence from abuse is important to the appropriate intervention for driving offenders.Keywords: DUI/DWI; DSM-IV-TR; Substance Use Disorder Diagnostic Schedule-IV (SUDDS-IV);
