Abstract:
Since its founding in 1980, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) has maintained a consistent presence in the nation’s court systems. Serving as unpaid victim advocates for DWI/DUI victims and survivor families, MADD has helped more than 46,000 victims/ survivors negotiate daunting and often not-so victim-friendly court systems. Now, 27 years after the nation’s largest grassroots organization was formed in response to the death of Cari Lightner (13 at the time) and the serious injury of Laura Lamb (five-and-a-half-monthsold) at the hands of repeat drunk drivers, MADD is reinvigorating one of its core programs, Court Monitoring. This article looks at this program, what it is for, and how effective it has been.Keywords: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); Fatality Analysis Reporting System; Johns Hopkins University; Operation Memorial Day Project;
