Abstract:
The ignition interlock device (IID) has had to overcome societal as well as technical challenges and will continue to grow and change until the day comes when we enter our vehicle, a passive sensor determines there is no alcohol present, and the vehicle will start and drive normally. If alcohol is detected anywhere in the vehicle, the driver will be required to submit a breath sample before starting. This article looks at the first ignition interlock device and what technology should be available for it in the future. Keywords: NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration); TEA-21 (Transportation Equity Act of the Twenty- First Century); Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation; Traffic Injury Research Foundation; Westat; Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
