Abstract:
Safe Ride Programs, originally developed in the northeast by the American Automobile Association, have flourished. The programs are especially popular around the holidays or celebratory events. College campuses use Safe Ride buses to shuttle students between downtown bars and suburban campuses. Alcoholism treatment professionals frequently decry such programs as enabling mechanisms. The treatment community contends such programs encourage binge drinking and lead to increased alcohol abuse and dependence. However the author notes such programs save lives by reducing alcohol crashes at a time when community alcohol consumption has increased. Also, enduring community partnerships develops an ancillary benefit.Keywords: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA); National Commission Against Drunk Driving (NCADD); Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP);
