Abstract:

This month’s column focuses on the outcome of screening and brief formal interventions for alcohol problems in the Emergency Department (ED). There are three recently published papers about the use of brief interventions for reducing excessive alcohol use. A brief intervention is defined as a series of short evaluation and therapy sessions which total less than four meetings. These interventions apparently do not exclude Alcoholic Anonymous or other similar treatment programs. However, these studies look only at medical intervention such as individual behavioral, psychotherapy, or group therapy.
