Abstract:

The New York State Police and the Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services jointly conducted the 12th annual “Alcohol/Substance Use and Traffic Safety Awareness Survey” (ASUTSAS) in 2001. The survey aimed to continue the assessment of public concerns and perceptions about ongoing alcohol/drug abuse, traffic safety, and public policy issues. The data, based on a convenience sample, provide an informal meter of public opinion over time regarding highway safety issues. In 2001, 1,524 respondents participated in the survey. This article looks at the survey’s results and the issues it provided information on.
