Abstract:
Self-driving cars are here: Tesla Model 3, Google cars, Uber’s automated ride-hailing service. But cities have not prepared for this future. Infrastructure—road maintenance, signage, and street lights, don’t/walk signs, worker practices, and even parking and land use—will need a thorough review before vehicle automation fits into the current landscape. This article briefly examines these issues and summarizes the arguments being made by advocates and opponents of self-driving vehicles. Keywords: Ralph Nader; Michael Bloomberg; National Safety Council; Road to Zero
