Abstract:

Science has long focused on the chemical effects of drug and alcohol addiction. But perhaps not enough emphasis has been placed on the role of social connection as an anchor. Here, journalist Johann Hari suggests an approach, based on scientific experiments and Portuguese drug laws, that takes into consideration an addict’s connections with loved ones and society. It might be something to consider in combination with traditional rehabilitation. The author suggests an approach to addiction treatment that supports additional treatments, such as therapy and prescription drugs. Connection to others assists in recovery and anchors the transition from drug and alcohol dependencies. Includes a side bar on medication-assisted treatment for substance abuse disorders.
