Abstract:
Prescription impairment is more prevalent in driving fatalities than impairment from illegal substances, including marijuana. Drivers over 50-years-old are taking more prescriptions. When they reach 75, they could average seven prescriptions per day. Although prescribed drugs are legal, these drugs can have a synergistic chemical interaction that produces a deadly cocktail of impairment. Donna Stressel has provided the reader with a list of medications that impair driving. She also challenges middle-aged drivers to know what medications they are taking, the effect of each, and their sum on driving. Keywords: Potentially Driver-Impairing Medications; Narcotics; Depressants; Stimulants; OTC medications; Driving Warning Signs; Increasing Numbers of Prescriptions; Responsibility of Physicians and Pharmacists
