Abstract:
Fraternities provide great social opportunities for members and lifelong friendships. In many cases, they engage in valuable charitable activities. Unfortunately, they also engage in activities that may discriminate against students or activities that cause or lead to serious physical injuries. This article addresses the following issues: 1. To what extent are colleges able to control the membership practices of fraternities? 2. To what extent can colleges exercise disciplinary authority over fraternities? 3. To what extent are colleges liable for fraternity activities that result in injury to fraternity members or nonmembers? 4. To what extent are national fraternities liable for the activities of their local chapters? Keywords: Control of Local Fraternities and Sororities by Colleges and National Fraternities: Liability and Regulatory Issues
