Abstract:

ATM installations can become magnets for criminal activity. Although the number of crimes at or near ATMs is small when compared to the number of transactions executed at these machines, concern for ATM safety is very important because cash is more readily available at an ATM than just about any other location. Any threat to a customer using an ATM can have a major impact on an ATM host-site in terms of confidence in the institution, adverse publicity, and the possibility of a negligence lawsuit. This article discusses who generally targets ATMs and how safety can be improved at ATMs and the areas surrounding them.
