Abstract: 

If we can draw but one powerful message from the research by Shotick and Galsky, it is that efforts to encourage students to practice academic integrity must begin by speaking to our students’ current beliefs and needs. Shotick and Galsky show that perceptions of cheating relate to students’ personal priorities as well as to their understanding of what constitutes acceptable behavior in their daily lives. This article discusses what pressures cause students to cheat and what approaches can be taken to prevent cheating.
