Abstract:
Understanding and complying with the Clery Act continues to create confusion and frustration among the most astute and legally savvy student affairs professionals. How does a diverse, urban, multi-site university come to grips with assuring that more than 800 mandated reporters understand and comply with a law that is unfamiliar to many of them? The following “case study” discusses an innovative webbased approach to Clery compliance. The University of Illinois at Chicago’s program trains Clery reporters about their duties, educates them on the referral services available for students, streamlines and centralizes reporting, minimizes error and duplication, and heightens awareness of campus crime. I recently completed UIC’s training, and I recommend the program as a model to other institutions grappling with Clery compliance demands (Linda P.
