Abstract: 

Our regular review of the research literature on student behavior and development. Reviews include: “Examining the Impact of Federal Grants to Reduce Violent Crimes Against Women on Campus” by Palmer, J.E., & Alda, E., the current study aims to understand better the true effect that federal funds have on institutionally reported rape statistics; “First Onset of Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviours in College” by Mortier, P., Demyttenaere, K., Auerbach, R.P., Cuijpers, P., Green, J.G., Kiekens, G., Kessler, R.C., Nock, M.K., Zaslavsky, A.M., & Bruffaerts, R., these researchers designed their study to explore the true risk factors for students whose first onset of STB occurs during college; “Veterans in the College Classroom” by Lopez, O.S., Springer, S.B., & Nelson, J.B., the authors detail five principles of effective instruction practice; “Social Perceptions Predict Change in Women’s Mental Health and Health-Related Quality of Life During the First Semester of College” by Arigo, D., & Cavanaugh, J. this study was conceived of as a way to examine the relationship between women’s social perceptions and their health outcomes in the first semester of college; “Sexual Minority College Students’ Perceptions on Dating Violence and Sexual Assault” by Ollen, E.W., Ameral, V.E., Reed, K.P., & Hines, D.A., investigates the perceptions and assumptions of sexual minority students with regard to sexual assault and dating violence, as well as the barriers to reporting and seeking help that those students detect; “Tweeting Negative Emotion: An Investigation of Twitter Data in the Aftermath of Violence on College Campuses” by Jones, N.M., Wojcik, S.P., Sweeting, J., & Silver, R.C., The authors of this unique study see promise in data collection through an exploration of Twitter activity.
