Abstract: 

Our regular review of the research literature on student behavior and development. Reviews include: “TakeCARE, a Video Bystander Program to Help Prevent Sexual Violence on College Campuses: Results of Two Randomized, Controlled Trials” by Jouriles, E.N., McDonald, R., Rosenfield, D., Levy, N., Sargent, K., Caiozzo, C., & Grych, J.H., the authors of the current study seek to address the impediments to implementation of bystander prevention programs by developing TakeCARE; “Safety in Numbers” by Czerwinski, B., chronicles some of the ways in which campuses are working to make open spaces safer; “From Margins to Mainstream: Social Media as a Tool for Campus Sexual Violence Activism” by Linder, C., Myers, J.S., Riggle, C., & Lacy, M., presents ample evidence of avenues for positive action, transformation, and healthy community-building in social-media activism; “Campus Security: More Upfront at Colleges and Universities” by Finkel, E., surveys college administrators and campus security personnel about the needs of campuses and about interesting and effective safety training and security methods including active-shooter incidents; “Social Anxiety and Alcohol-Related Sexual Victimization: A Longitudinal Pilot Study of College Women” by Schry, A.R., Maddox, B.B., & White, S.W., here the authors suggest that social anxiety serves as a risk factor for sexual victimization, rather than sexual victimization leading to increased social anxiety;and “‘And Then One Night When I Went to Class . . .’: The Impact of Sexual Assault Bystander Intervention Workshops Incorporated in Academic Courses” by Senn, C.Y., & Forrest, A., the authors discuss their program which seeks to affect campus culture by introducing bystander intervention training into the curriculum.
