Abstract:

Meditation is achieving a state of consciousness which is beyond mind. It is a state of pure awareness where we are alert and aware but without any thoughts. It is being fully in a present moment without thinking or judging. You are in the Witness State, inside and outside of yourself without reaction. The effect of this is inner peace, joy and balance. This is also called self-realization or connecting with higher supernatural power. This is not connected with any particular religion. It could be regarded as a pure psychophysiological phenomenon. Herbert Benson, in his book The Relaxation Response, reviewed transcendental meditation and different other techniques used for relaxation. In his book he gives four simple steps to achieve relaxation, the most beneficial aspect of meditation.
