Abstract:

Approximately 47 million people in United States or about 24% of the population have the metabolic syndrome. (Ford, Giles, Dietz, 2002). Individuals with the metabolic syndrome are at increased risk for the development of type II diabetes and coronary artery disease. The purpose of this study is to document the incidence of the metabolic syndrome in newly incarcerated female offenders, and hopefully to use this data to make recommendations to these offenders about lifestyle modifications that these offenders can make to help prevent diabetes and coronary artery disease.
