Abstract:
The scope and responsibility of nurses practicing in Corrections, increases their potential exposure to issues of liability. The number of nurses working in the field of Corrections is not clearly documented. The available data suggest that there are 18,033 Registered Nurses practicing in the field of correctional health care (2000 National Work Force Study). A review of the literature provides limited documentation on the legal aspects of nursing practice in Corrections. This article will offer a discussion on nursing practice in Corrections and the legal accountability associated with the nurse’s practice. The author will specifically discuss documentation, medication administration, and patient assessment and nurse-physician communication regarding patients. Keywords: orientation program, Nurse Practice Act, Estelle v.
