Abstract:

The management of chronic diseases is a major concern for departments of corrections across the country. The National Commission on Correctional Health Care (2002) has estimated that the prevalence of chronic disease within correctional settings is staggering. The diseases they define as chronic include, but are not limited to, asthma, diabetes, and hypertension. For hypertension, the NCCHC estimated that 18% of the prisoner population, or more than 283,000prisoners, had the disease.By any assessment, this prevalence figure is significant and requires the attention of correctional professionals.
