Abstract:

The commitment of the New Jersey Department of Corrections (NJDOC) to ensure “best practices” guides the department’s efforts in fulfilling its mission. In 2003, the “Innovations and Best Practices” initiative was formed as a vehicle for articulating this vision. A group of individuals representing a diverse cross-section of units and disciplines was assigned the task of conducting a review, needs assessment, and summary of existing inmate programs. The development of a mechanism for auditing department functioning was the group’s primary goal.
