Abstract:

For those of us who work in corrections, persistent stress can lead to frustration, anger, resentment, and eventually burnout. Our stress comes not only from those who have been incarcerated but also from the actual physical aspects of our environment. Our conditions involve cement floors, noise, restricted movement, and limited access to items that we otherwise would use in our everyday lives. Even fi nding a quiet space to take a few moments to regroup can be impossible. Chronic stress can be insidious. We feel trapped in its grip, and over time we can burn out.
