Abstract:
As the number of women detained in jails and prisons increases each year, providers are recognizing the many differences in the health care requirements of men and women. Faced with increasing health care challenges unique to women, correctional medicine must evolve to meet them. Pregnancy, alone, is often the source of much angst for medical and correctional personnel. Opiate- dependant pregnancies amplify this concern with their additional risks. This article is intended to alleviate some of that anxiety. It focuses on providing adequate healthcare, preventing poor outcomes, and preparing the pregnant, opioid-adicted inmate for transition into the community in a cost-effective manner. Keywords: addiction, withdrawl, complications, poly-substance abuse, Detoxification, Methadone
