Abstract:

In February, 2010, the American Bar Association (ABA) issued a new set of standards for treatment of prisoners. 1 This is a long-awaited update on standards issued initially in 1981 and supplemented, but not amended, in 1985. They offer clear and concise expectations for the care and treatment of prisoners, without being overly prescriptive. This set of standards addresses prisons generally, with specifi c sections relevant to health care services— intake assessment, health care, mental health care, dental care, and rehabilitation and reintegration, among others. The ABA addresses the basic principle of respect for human rights and dignity.
