Abstract:

This article summarizes the results of a study arising from an outbreak of Valley Fever and subsequent litigation filed by African-American inmates against the California Department of Corrections (“Awareness and Environmental Exposures Related to Coccidioidomycosis Among Inmates at Two California Prisons, 2013” by Kaitlin Benedict, Anne E. Purfield, Janet Mohle-Boetani, Charlotte Wheeler, and Benjamin J. Park, published in 22 Journal of Correctional Health Care 157). While no clear guidelines emerged for mitigating the conditions that lead to coccidioidomycosis infection, the findings support policies that would avoid sending African-American inmates, who are more susceptible to Valley Fever, to facilities in high risk areas.
