Abstract:

Addiction is now understood to be a brain disease. Although initial use may be voluntary, habituation may create physiological or neurological dependence, and a medical condition that demands formal treatment. Among the promising new approaches is medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Yet many states have laws restricting or forbidding MAT, and even where it is legal, it is often viewed with suspicion. This article outlines some of the important benefits to MAT, dispels misconceptions about the approach, and examines “gray” areas where caution is warranted.
