Abstract:
Transmission of mycobacterium tuberculosis among correctional staff and inmates, and then to family, friends, and the community, is well documented. This article reviews a recent paper published in American Journal of Public Health, “Tuberculosis in Jails and Prisons: United States, 2002-2013,” by Lauren A. Lambert, Lori R. Armstrong, Mark N. Lobato, Christine Ho, Anne Marie France, and Maryam B. Haddad, which surveys the incidence of TB among both staff and inmates of U.S. prisons and jails, using data from the CDC National Tuberculosis Surveillance System. Among the findings, while overall infection rates are down, they are still high; and the majority of new cases are now found among foreign-born residents. Keywords: mycobacterium tuberculosis; National Tuberculosis Surveillance System
