Abstract:

Contributing editor Margaret Moreland reviews a recent paper by Jennifer Aldrich, Jessica Kant, and Eric Gramszlo in the AMA Journal of Ethics, “Gender-Affirming Care in Corrections: Law and Policy,” which surveys the current law and practice in transgender health care and treatment. Transgender individuals are disproportionately incarcerated and standards of care, while they have evolved over the last decade, still erect many barriers to gender affirmation. The authors examine the law, prison practices, and challenges, such as housing, safety, sexual assault, and clinical complications, faced by transgender inmates, and make recommendations for improvement in all of these domains.
