Abstract:

How many times have you had this happen—at intake screening the detainee seems to be healthy and denies any medical or mental health issues, then a few hours, days or weeks later complains about a particular health issue alleging that it either happened just before incarceration or has been long standing? In this article, Catherine Knox looks at how inaccurate and unreliable health information obtained at intake can be, the many reasons why this happens, and how to compensate for the lack of a full, factual account of a detainee’s health condition and make better decisions in less-than-ideal circumstances.
