Abstract: 

The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) promotes the elimination of health gaps for all via the “Quintuple Aim” healthcare framework, which emphasizes the importance of optimizing the overall healthcare system to establish health equity. The original Triple Aim framework promoted programs that improve population health, enhance the care experience, and reduce costs. Later these aims expanded to include reducing healthcare provider burnout. Correctional health care can and should pay a significant role in advancing the Quintuple Aim. Correctional health care is best understood as an integral part of our public health system. Understanding an overall jail population’s health risks has become increasingly important for reducing inmates’ morbidity and mortality while incarcerated and after release. The provision of care must therefore transition to a comprehensive population health view in order to improve resource utilization and clinical care.
